If your looking for talent on both sides of the ball look no further than Helix High School, as you take a closer look at the perennial East County powerhouse you can't help but notice the 6'0 190 pound senior DB/Receiver Scottie Young. Young is just another name in a long line of ballers to come out of the La Mesa football factory and is already committed to play at The University of Arizona next Fall. Committed to the Wildcats as a safety Young has been terrorizing defenses on the offensive side of the ball all season, so far in 2016 through 7 games he has 45 catches for 670 yards and 6 TD's for an average of 14.9 yards a catch with his longest catch being 66 yards. With losses already to Utah State Champion Timpview and Cathedral Catholic Young was asked about about the early season struggles of the highlanders "We started off slow early simply due to the lack of experience we had and having a new coach. We had to learn how to win and find a identity for our selves, but now we are starting to clique on all three elements of the game."

Next up for Scottie and The Scotties is 8-0 Grossmont High School in a game with Grossmont Hills league championship implications. After dismantling their last 3 opponents by a combined score of 143-14 I would say Helix is peaking at just the right time for this heated matchup that dates back to 1952, " I'm not really sure about the history between the two schools, all I know is that helix has won every game for the last 25 years." Scottie respects what the Hillers have done so far this season but doesn't feel this game should be made bigger than it is "They're having a good year but so are we and we can't make this game something it's not. Of course our is goal is to win every game and also league just like them but if we just play Helix football everything will be fine."

Young says that he feels he is the best pure football player in the county and believes his teammates have the skills to stop the high flying aerial attack of Grossmont tandem Hunter Gaines and Domonique Guevara "He is an ok wideout but he hasn't faced our corners Evan Perkins and Rashad Scott who are pretty good themselves."

Helix is expected to be one of the top seeds in the Open Division playoffs this season and I asked Scottie what he thinks of the other top teams in the county that they might face "Those are the games that we train so hard for and get excited for because there is a little more meaning to it because you win or go home. Also those are the games everyone wants to see knowing the history between Helix and Oceanside and how they've been dominate in San Diego County. I respect Saints and Madison and how they went up every year and are now some of the top tier teams because of all the athletes they have. We all know each other so there's even more of an edge."

After moving to San Diego from Florida in middle school Young had a certain criteria for choosing which high school he would attend "I wanted to go somewhere where I knew I could win and also have good chance of getting looked at and going to college. Also I knew Helix was a great school that prepares you for the real world and life after sports, it's almost like a foundation for your life."

I'd say Scottie deciding to be a Scottie was the best decision of his young life so far.
